Behind the Scenes

On my daily commute, I go past one of two routes depending on the time. It’s like clockwork such that sometimes without mentally committing myself, I find myself driving along the route. I am sharing this to explain how familiar this route is and how much I felt I noticed along my work trips.

Along this commute, there was a very busy intersection, an area with a few people selling early morning snacks such as dundun and akara for instance. After a while, I noticed that the area was sealed off and the road side sellers had to relocate. Guess what? I drove past there literally every day and soon became accustomed to the high solid fence erected to cordon off the area. It became normal to me not to see any activity there. Just a fence and the road.

So you can imagine how pleasantly surprised I was to drive past a few weeks ago and see a ‘fresh’ building up there and the entire fence down. That contraption was hiding the construction going on behind it and what a lovely building it had become. I could not have imagined anything so beautiful was going on behind when the fence was up.

It’s June and we are almost at the half year mark. Perhaps your life and circumstance looks just as familiar as it has always been, nothing new there. Infact, for passers-by like me, you probably made some cosmetic changes, and cleaned up the external but it’s pretty much the same. It looks as though you have made changes to your habits and your lifestyle, and although it is visible on the outside, not much appears to be happening by the way of what you really want.

I am here to encourage you and remind you that things do happen behind the scenes. Just like this building was coming up behind the fence with little or no appearance of activity, very little noise. Oftentimes, we get discouraged by the apparent lack of visible progress, and as humans that we are, we feel the need to have some small joys, just a small sense of activity to comfort us. We get that, very honestly. However, if we review our lives, we would realise that we have made some progress.

But great things sometimes appear to happen suddenly. One day, the fence just comes down and we see the masterful edifice that has been built and whilst it feels like ‘Suddenly’, God laughs and says, I have been working here all along. And sometimes, it all begins to make sense, you saw a few people hanging around that fence a few times but took no particular notice? Yes, they were working on the site. Often times when you had settled at work or left for the night and were oblivious of that plot, work was going on.

This is to encourage you to trust God. He is working even though we don’t know just how, God is working even now. What’s better than having God surprise everyone when the fence comes down? You cannot imagine how surprised I was when I saw the new building open for business. That’s how God will surprise you. .

“When the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them. The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.”

Psalm 126:1-3

The truth is that God is working whether we see Him at work or not, like it was with this building.  As a matter of fact, His workings are premised on our belief rather than our seeing or understanding, this is why Faith is supposed to be a ‘rest’ – knowing that He is doing the behind-the-scenes work.  It’s been a tough lesson but I have learned that He seems to work best when we stop looking to ‘make sure’ We focus on WHO rather than HOW and believe that it has been ‘taken care of in God”. And then, one day, without much notice to us, the walls come down and everyone can see that God has been working all along.

God bless you.

  1. This is particularly for me I assure you Eloho. The past month has been laced with instances of me seeing progress in areas of my life I’d been worried were dead despite my best efforts.

I found that all of a sudden, things started falling in place. God indeed works in us behind the scenes in wondrous ways.

To continue trusting in Him, doing all the right things and doing things right, the results finally come.

    God bless your heart. 🙂

  2. Wow! First time here. Well-done Eloho. This write-up was for me and I thank God I followed the link. Psalm 126:1-3 made more sense after reading.
    God bless you.

What are you grateful for?

Continuing with an attitude of thanksgiving from yesterday,  just thinking back on my life’s journey has overwhelmed me with an immense sense of gratitude. I
