The Lord said to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts– to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver, and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of craftsmanship. Moreover, I have appointed Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan to help him. Also I have given skill to all the craftsmen to make everything I have commanded you.”Exodus 31:1-6
At the time this scripture was written, Israel in its entirety had come to acknowledge the office of priesthood and the anointing of God upon the lives of Moses, Aaron, Miriam, and even Joshua. This scripture, however, presents an entirely different scenario. Although Bezalel and Oholiab were not from the priestly tribe of Levi, God’s spirit came upon these two simple craftsmen, within their natural skill sets and attitudes. He empowered and enabled them to do the supernatural, things which had never been seen or even conceived by mere mortals. They would not only construct the furnishings of God’s house, but would also build the very Ark of the Covenant – the tangible sign of God’s presence on the earth. Pause!
This task wasn’t given to the frontline guys, the called ones, the anointed ministers standing before Israel; it was given to normal people with normal day to day talents and God said ‘I have filled with the Spirit of God with skill and ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts…’ and ‘…I have given skill…’
What can we learn from Bezalel and Oholiab today?
Firstly, it is a lie from the pit of hell that God only anoints people who have received a calling into full-time ministry. We ALL need to understand deep in our hearts that God anoints us relative to our responsibility, and He is interested in ordinary people like me and you as well. Same way God gave these ordinary men the anointing to perfect their skills and practice their craft at unprecedented levels; He will anoint you, no matter your profession. Think about it, whether God has called you to be a nurse, doctor, teacher, business person, politician, or entertainer, He wants to bring a new measure of excellence and skill to your life today. God is surely raising a generation of Christians who will become leaders in every area of society because of the quality of their character and the excellence of their work, which will serve as a testimony and ensure God’s presence on earth.
Secondly, in Prophet Zechariah’s time, God responded to the threat of demonic empires destroying His people by showing him four craftsmen (Zechariah 1:18-21, NKJV). Although these craftsmen were probably angelic beings, the scripture describing them as craftsmen speaks to our skill as well. Even as God raised these four angelic beings to confront the enemy in the time of Zechariah, He is raising human craftsmen and craftswomen to confound the devil and break his power. God is past mediocrity; He is looking to make men and women so skilled in their craft and so excellent in their character, that they will have the ears and attention of world leaders. God is looking to anoint them, and cause them to rise to amazing positions of power and influence.
Let us rise up and accept by faith the reality that the same God who anointed Bezalel and Oholiab is waiting to anoint us. He is willing to give us every skill we require to fulfill His purpose. Are we willing to arise and work?
God’s anointing is available to us when we take responsibility! He will never anoint our laziness.
